NRL Legend Wally Lewis Gains Vital Support from Wife in CTE Struggle
Rugby league immortal Wally Lewis has revealed that his marriage to his second wife, Lynda Adams, has provided a significant health boost as he confronts the debilitating effects of epilepsy and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The Queensland, Kangaroos, and Brisbane Broncos icon publicly disclosed his diagnosis of CTE in 2023, a condition most commonly associated with athletes who have sustained repeated concussions and traumatic head injuries.
The Devastating Impact of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a progressive brain disorder frequently found in individuals involved in contact sports such as rugby league and Australian Rules football. The symptoms are severe and multifaceted, including memory loss, persistent confusion, impaired judgment, increased aggression, clinical depression, and ultimately, progressive dementia. Lewis has previously admitted that CTE is taking a considerable toll on his daily life, particularly as he loses track of how many times he repeats himself during conversations.
Lynda Adams: A Pillar of Strength and Organization
According to a source within the couple's inner circle, Lynda Adams has had a profoundly positive impact on "The King," providing unwavering support and structure. The insider disclosed that Lynda manages his life with military precision, meticulously diarising everything from his morning coffee routine to everyday tasks. This organised approach is crucial in helping Lewis maintain his fitness and proactively manage the dementia-type symptoms associated with CTE.
"She does everything for him and runs his life with military precision," the source revealed. "Wally is in good shape and is doing everything to keep fit and stay ahead of the dementia-type symptoms the condition brings."
Lewis's Personal Account of Support and Patience
Wally Lewis, who resigned from his position as a television newsreader in 2023 due to health reasons, has openly discussed Lynda's instrumental role in his health journey. On the Howie Games podcast, he expressed deep gratitude for her patience and understanding. Lewis described frequent moments where he notices a particular expression on Lynda's face, or on the face of his close friend, rugby league legend Gene Miles, indicating he has repeated himself.
"My partner Lynda has been fantastic through it, and has been very patient," Lewis stated. "I'll say to her 'Have I already said that?' And she'll say it doesn't matter. And I'll say how many times have I said it, and she'll say – and I'm putting my fingers up here – two, three, four, five times."
He added that while the embarrassment of being repetitive was initially a concern, he has now moved past it, focusing instead on apologising and continuing with life.
Family Dynamics and the Path Forward
The couple's wedding in April of last year was notably boycotted by Lewis's children from his first marriage to Jacqueline. While Lynda's daughter attended the ceremony, Lewis's sons, Lincoln and Mitchell, and his daughter, Jamie-Lee, were conspicuously absent. Reports indicate that Lincoln was attending an event nearby on the same day.
Lewis reportedly proposed to Lynda in late 2024, three years after his separation from Jacqueline, following a thirty-six-year marriage. The separation was confirmed in February 2021, with Lewis acknowledging the pain it caused his family and expressing hope for rebuilding ties over time.
"This is a deeply personal matter that we do not want to discuss publicly," he said at the time. "I want to acknowledge the pain and upset my family has gone through since Jacqui and I separated last year. I hope over time we can rebuild our ties and move on with life."
Despite these family complexities, the support from Lynda Adams remains a cornerstone in Wally Lewis's ongoing battle against the severe challenges posed by chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
