Ten Premier League Clubs Could Still Qualify for Europe After Villa and Palace Wins
Arsenal and Manchester City have already secured their places in UEFA competitions for the upcoming season, but as many as eight other Premier League clubs could join them in European football, potentially bringing the total to ten teams. This follows significant victories for Aston Villa and Crystal Palace in their respective UEFA tournaments, which have opened new pathways for qualification.
Current Qualification Landscape
The Premier League could see a record number of clubs in Europe next season, with Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Nottingham Forest all advancing to the semi-finals of their UEFA competitions. Forest and Villa are set to face each other in the Europa League final four, while Palace will take on Shakhtar Donetsk for a spot in the Conference League final. In any given season, a maximum of eleven clubs can qualify for European competitions, but Liverpool's recent loss to Paris Saint-Germain has reduced that potential maximum to ten for this campaign.
Arsenal have already locked in a Champions League berth, and Manchester City are assured of European football once again. At least six additional sides will join them, with three of those teams earning Champions League spots by finishing in the top five of the Premier League. Currently, sixth place qualifies for the Europa League, and seventh place secures a Conference League spot.
FA Cup and UEFA Competition Routes
Winning the FA Cup also grants a place in the Europa League, meaning Leeds United, Southampton, or even Chelsea could qualify through that route. However, if Manchester City lift the trophy, or if Chelsea win it and finish in the top seven, then sixth and seventh places would qualify for the Europa League, with eighth place taking the Conference League spot.
The key to unlocking additional European berths lies in Forest, Palace, or Villa winning their UEFA competitions. Success in the Europa League comes with automatic Champions League qualification. A ninth club could qualify if Forest or Villa win the Europa League and finish outside the top six, mirroring last season's scenario with Tottenham Hotspur.
Similarly, winning the Conference League qualifies a club for the Europa League. If Crystal Palace win their first European trophy, it would add a ninth berth, although they still have a mathematical chance to qualify through the league.
Pathway to Ten Clubs
A combination of Forest or Villa winning the Europa League and Palace winning the Conference League is how the Premier League could achieve ten teams in Europe next season. However, this scenario requires the winners to finish outside the top six in the league standings.
The chances of Europa League success are bolstered by the fact that a Premier League club is already guaranteed a place in the final in Istanbul. Either Forest or Villa will face Braga or Freiburg in the Turkish capital four days before the final day of the Premier League season.
As for Palace, if they overcome Shakhtar Donetsk, they will meet either Rayo Vallecano or Strasbourg in the Conference League final, which is hosted in Leipzig three days after the Premier League's last matchday.
