Starmer Warns Strait of Hormuz Reopening Won't End Economic Woes
Starmer: Strait of Hormuz Reopening Not a Return to Normal

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has cautioned that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route, will not lead to an immediate return to economic normalcy for Britain. In an interview with BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Starmer emphasised that the UK must pursue a fundamentally different trajectory rather than reverting to the pre-crisis status quo.

Starmer's Warning on Economic Recovery

Sir Keir argued that previous governments, after shocks such as the 2008 financial crash and the Covid-19 pandemic, aimed only to restore the status quo. He stated, 'The status quo wasn't working. We cannot do that again. We have to take a different course in response to this crisis.' The Prime Minister acknowledged widespread public frustration over two decades of economic stagnation.

Impact of the Iran Conflict

The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, in retaliation for the US-Israeli war, has disrupted the flow of a fifth of the world's oil supply. Starmer is leading a coalition with French President Emmanuel Macron to secure the reopening of the waterway. However, he warned that even after reopening, inflation spikes and volatility would persist, compounded by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

'I don't want anybody to think that once the Strait of Hormuz is open, it all returns to normal. It won't be like that,' Starmer said. He highlighted the need for greater resilience through closer ties with Europe and a transition to green energy.

Iran's Negotiation Proposal

Meanwhile, Iran's state-run IRNA news agency reported that Tehran has submitted a new negotiation proposal to mediators in Pakistan. US President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the proposal, though he did not elaborate on specific objections.
