Radio presenter and author Bridget Hustwaite has launched a scathing public rebuke against her former partner, Fremantle Dockers defender Oscar McDonald, accusing him of 'blatant bullying and disrespect' following a social media post that many interpreted as a direct dig at her work.
Birthday Post Sparks Controversy
The controversy erupted after McDonald posted a photograph on Friday celebrating his 30th birthday surrounded by friends, captioned '30. Tough age apparently.' This remark was widely seen as a pointed reference to Hustwaite's recently published book titled 'Figuring Out 30', which explores the challenges and reflections of reaching that milestone age.
Even within McDonald's inner circle, the comment did not go unnoticed. His sister Sacha responded to the post with the phrase 'Figured it out,' further fueling speculation about the intended target of the birthday message.
Hustwaite's Public Response
Hustwaite addressed the situation directly in an Instagram Story on Sunday, recorded shortly after she was discharged from hospital following treatment for a ruptured cyst. In the emotional clip, she revealed she had been sent articles about McDonald's post throughout the day but could not access them directly because she had blocked him on social media platforms.
'I thought I was in for quite a peaceful day of recovery but I've been sent articles throughout the day of some social media posts that I can't access, because I have this person blocked on socials,' Hustwaite explained in the video.
She continued with a firm condemnation of McDonald's actions: 'I was going to ignore it because I don't like how this kind of conversation and topic can be trivialised for online consumption, like, regarding relationships. But I also can't really just sit back and allow, like, blatant bullying and disrespect of me and my work.'
Professional Conduct Questioned
The radio star specifically called out McDonald's professional responsibilities, noting: 'If you work in a public-facing role, and especially if you represent, you know, a brand organisation, a sporting club, this is not a good look on you, on who you work for, and it's just mean.'
Hustwaite emphasized the seriousness of her decision to end the relationship late last year, stating: 'I ended my relationship last year for reasons that are really serious to me ... for me it's much more serious than just airing dirty laundry.'
Regarding the birthday post specifically, she added: 'I don't know why a birthday post had to be turned into just taking swipes at me but, you know, I'm not surprised. I just wanted to stand up for myself.'
Relationship Background and Sacrifices
The public fallout marks a dramatic shift from what was once a promising relationship that began with significant life changes in late 2023. Hustwaite relocated from Melbourne to Perth to live with McDonald after he signed with the Fremantle Dockers, describing the cross-country move at the time as 'a fun new adventure and a really nice change of scenery.'
The radio host fully embraced her new life in Western Australia, even hinting she would pursue fresh opportunities if they presented themselves while supporting McDonald's AFL career. She later revealed the extensive travel commitments she undertook during their relationship, writing: 'Flew out 60 times between Perth and Melbourne throughout that period so really tried.'
Emotional Toll Revealed
In a candid message shared this week, Hustwaite hinted at the substantial emotional cost of maintaining the long-distance arrangement and her ultimate decision to prioritize her own wellbeing over the relationship.
'I couldn't keep abandoning myself, my health and my career,' she wrote in a reflective post that provided insight into her thought process when ending the partnership.
Despite the current controversy and the relationship's dissolution, Hustwaite maintained a philosophical perspective: 'No regrets because I know my heart, what I bring to all of my relationships and what I stand for both publicly and privately.'
The situation continues to develop as both parties navigate the aftermath of their very public disagreement, with Hustwaite's allegations of bullying and disrespect now placing McDonald's social media conduct under scrutiny from both fans and the broader public.
