A new online petition is urging the UK Government to fund free TV licences for everyone who has reached State Pension age, arguing older people should not have to pay the £180 annual fee. The proposal would extend free TV licences to all pensioners, including those who do not qualify for Pension Credit.
Petition calls for universal free TV licences
The petition, created by Michael Thompson, has been published on the UK Parliament website and will remain open until March 8, 2027. Mr Thompson argues many older people are struggling with rising household costs and rely on television for companionship, particularly those living alone.
Currently, free TV licences are only available to people aged 75 and over who receive Pension Credit, or live with a partner who receives the means-tested benefit. Other concessions are available for people who are registered blind or severely sight impaired, and those living in certain types of residential accommodation.
Petition wording and rationale
The petition, titled 'Fund free TV licences for all pensioners', states: "We want the Government to fund free TV licences for existing pensioners and those who reach the official retirement age. When people reach retirement age, we think they should receive a state-financed free TV licence."
It continues: "Many pensioners live on the breadline with only the TV for company. With the cost of food soaring and utility bills ever higher, we feel there is a desperate need to provide all pensioners with at least this concession."
The petition also argues people who have contributed through taxes and raised families should not have to pay for a TV licence in retirement, while questioning the salaries paid to some media figures.
Cost and parliamentary process
The annual cost of a colour TV licence increased to £180 in April 2026, equivalent to £15 per month.
Under the parliamentary petitions process, the UK Government must provide a written response if the proposal attracts 10,000 signatures. At 100,000 signatures, it will be considered by the Petitions Committee for debate in Parliament.
