Ronnie O'Sullivan Confirms Dublin Departure for World Snooker Championship

Snooker icon Ronnie O'Sullivan has officially announced that he will be travelling to the prestigious World Snooker Championship directly from his new base in Dublin. The seven-time world champion, affectionately known as The Rocket, is making this move primarily for tax considerations, following his recent relocation from the United Kingdom to Dubai with his wife, actress Laila Rouass.

Triple Crown Event and Irish Connection

The esteemed World Snooker Championship, a cornerstone of snooker's Triple Crown series, is scheduled to commence this Saturday and will run through until May 4th. All matches will be held at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. O'Sullivan, who recently secured victory in the inaugural John Virgo Trophy in Ireland by defeating John Higgins, has revealed that he now spends a significant portion of his time residing in Ireland.

"I live here quite a lot now," O'Sullivan stated, explaining his frequent travel between Ireland and the UK during the snooker season. "I spend three months a year here. I've always loved coming to Ireland. It has always had a special place in my heart." He further elaborated on his positive experiences, particularly praising the electric atmosphere at venues like Goffs, where he feels comfortable and supported by enthusiastic crowds.

Wellbeing and Strategic Relocation to Dubai

O'Sullivan first declared his intention to move to the Middle East after his semi-final exit at last year's World Championship. Since then, he has admitted that the relocation to Dubai has profoundly transformed his overall wellbeing and made the extensive global travel required during the snooker season far more manageable. His new home in Dubai serves as a strategically convenient base for tournaments across the Middle East and China, reducing the debilitating effects of constant jet lag.

"It wears you down after a while. It's the jet lag more than anything. You never really recover," O'Sullivan commented on the gruelling travel demands of professional snooker. He kept a detailed diary, noting that for approximately ninety days each year, he felt like he was in a "zombie state," which severely impacted his performance. "I put a lot of importance on feeling good, your wellbeing and being at your optimum level. It went against all of my principles and values," he added, emphasising that mental and physical harmony is crucial for playing at his best.

Wife's Influence and Practice Facilities

The decision to relocate was also significantly influenced by his wife, Laila Rouass. O'Sullivan explained that while he considered moving to Sheffield for better practice access, his wife preferred alternatives like Spain or Dubai. Ultimately, they chose Dubai due to its proximity to key tournament locations in China and the Middle East, aligning perfectly with his professional commitments.

"It's really good. I've got a great practice facility there, which was one of the main reasons for going," O'Sullivan shared in an interview. "I was struggling to find somewhere to play. It was either get a train up to Sheffield or try to move to Sheffield. But my wife wasn't too keen on Sheffield." This move has not only provided him with excellent training amenities but has also enhanced his travel logistics, allowing him to maintain peak condition throughout the season.

Recent Form and Future Prospects

Reflecting on his recent performances, O'Sullivan expressed satisfaction with his current form after a challenging period. "I started playing alright a couple of weeks ago," he said. "For three years I have been very poor, pretty much every day. So I didn't think I'd ever have another day where I'd feel good. But the last month I've been feeling alright." This resurgence in confidence and comfort at the table bodes well for his upcoming campaign at the World Snooker Championship, where he aims to add an eighth title to his illustrious career.
