Older state pensioners in the UK are set to receive a £94 tax boost from April 2027, following the introduction of a new Pension Tax Allowance announced by Chancellor John Healey in the Budget.
The new system replaces previous plans and allows all state pensioners, including those on pre-2016 and post-2016 pensions, to collect a tax-free allowance up to the value of the full new state pension for a pensioner with a full National Insurance record.
New Tax-Free Threshold Details
The full new state pension will be £13,036.40, and this will become the new tax threshold for all state pensioners, rounded up to £13,037. The exemption applies to any pensioner with any type of income, including from work, savings, Additional Pension, or property income.
Those exceeding the threshold will see their tax-free allowance tapered off, with the tax exemption turned into a tax reduction up to a threshold of £13,319. This means older state pensioners will get a tax exemption of £13,037 instead of the usual £12,570, handing them an extra £94 back in tax that they would not have received under previous plans.
How the Pension Tax Allowance Works
The Treasury published new guidance explaining the mechanism. From April 2027, if total income is no more than the full annual value of the new State Pension, pensioners will receive the full Pension Tax Allowance and will not be brought into paying tax because of State Pension uprating in this Parliament.
This applies regardless of income source, whether from the State Pension, a private pension, earnings from work, self-employment, savings, property, or dividend income. For those with income slightly higher than the full annual value, the allowance gradually reduces, with the Pension Tax Allowance reducing by £1 for every £3 of income above the full level.
Automatic Application and Future Uprating
Pensioners will not need to contact HMRC or make a claim, as HMRC will apply the Pension Tax Allowance automatically using information on State Pension age and income. From the tax year beginning 6 April 2027, the full annual value of the new State Pension will increase to £13,036.40.
For tax years 2028-29 and 2029-30, the value of the Pension Tax Allowance will be uprated in line with the full annual value of the new State Pension.
