US broadcasting giant NBC has issued a formal apology to golf legend Tiger Woods following intense public backlash over what viewers labelled "despicable" coverage of his recent DUI crash and arrest. The network erroneously aired footage from Woods' severe 2021 vehicle accident in California while reporting on his latest incident in Florida last Friday.
Broadcaster's Blunder Sparks Outrage
During NBC's regular PGA Tour coverage, presenter Dan Hicks addressed details of Woods' arrest in Florida when producers mistakenly displayed dramatic footage from the golfer's 2021 crash instead of images from the current incident. That previous accident required Los Angeles County Police to cut Woods from the wreckage, resulting in multiple leg injuries and extensive surgery for the fifteen-time major champion.
Social media erupted with criticism immediately following the broadcast error. One viewer commented: "Well done NBC Sports. The video you just showed of Tiger Woods vehicle was not from his accident yesterday. Come on, do better." Another posted: "Okay, NBC, you're terrible. I just watched an update about Tiger Woods car wreck yesterday. All you did was show damage from his wreck six years ago. Nothing about the minor wreck yesterday. Despicable."
Formal On-Air Apology Issued
NBC subsequently issued a correction during their broadcast, with Hicks stating: "We want to take this time to make a correction. Before we came on the air today with our regular PGA Tour coverage... our studio show inadvertently showed the incorrect picture of the car crash Tiger Woods was in. It was another previous car crash. It was not the correct one. The latest one, that was yesterday, so, we apologise for that. Just wanted to straighten that out before we go any further."
The apology footage was clipped and widely circulated across social media platforms, drawing further attention to the broadcasting error that many attributed to poor editorial oversight and sensationalist reporting tendencies.
Details of the Recent Incident
Tiger Woods, aged fifty, was involved in a vehicle incident described as a "high-speed" SUV crash last Friday. According to reports, the golf champion attempted to overtake a truck and trailer on a residential road but clipped the back of the vehicle, causing his own car to tip onto its side. This marks the latest in a series of vehicular incidents involving Woods throughout his career.
Following the crash, Woods was arrested and transported to Martin County Jail in Florida, where he faced two misdemeanour charges: DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Police officers reported observing "signs of impairment" in Woods' behaviour, which they attributed to "some type of medication or drug." While a breathalyser test cleared him of alcohol consumption, Woods declined to provide a urine sample for further substance testing.
Competition Schedule Unaffected
Despite the arrest and vehicle crash, Woods remains scheduled to appear at the prestigious Masters tournament at Augusta. The event is set to commence on Thursday, April 9th and conclude on Sunday, April 12th. Woods last competed professionally at the 2024 Open Championship, making his potential Masters appearance particularly significant for golf enthusiasts worldwide.
The broadcasting error has reignited discussions about media responsibility and accuracy in reporting celebrity incidents, particularly those involving legal matters and personal safety. Many critics have questioned whether the pressure for sensational coverage contributed to NBC's failure to verify their visual materials before airing.
