Former Premier League Striker Michail Antonio Convicted Over Speeding Lamborghini Incident
Ex-West Ham United forward Michail Antonio is confronting the serious prospect of a driving ban after a magistrates' court found him guilty of failing to identify the driver of his high-performance Lamborghini, which was recorded speeding last year. The 36-year-old footballer, currently plying his trade in the Qatar Stars League, was convicted in absentia at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, marking a significant legal setback for the athlete.
Speeding Incident and Legal Proceedings
The conviction stems from Antonio's failure to provide crucial information to West Midlands Police regarding a speeding incident on March 1 of last year. His Lamborghini Urus was captured travelling at an average speed of 50mph in a clearly marked 40mph zone along Lee Bank Middleway and Belgrave Middleway in Birmingham. Interestingly, prosecutors decided to drop the actual speeding charge itself, focusing instead on the footballer's lack of cooperation with the authorities.
Court proceedings revealed that police dispatched a formal letter requesting driver details to Antonio's residential address in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, just three days after the speeding violation. Prosecutor Lucy Allen informed the magistrates that "there has been no response received to that notice", leading to the conviction for failing to provide information on April 4 last year. Antonio was not legally represented during the brief 12-minute hearing, and the court noted he had supplied no details regarding his current income.
Accumulated Penalty Points and Sentencing
This latest conviction carries severe implications for Antonio's driving privileges. The Jamaican international already has six penalty points on his licence, including points for driving without insurance during a separate, serious incident in December 2024. On that occasion, Antonio crashed a Ferrari into a tree in Essex, sustaining a badly broken leg and spending three weeks in hospital.
The new offence is expected to result in an additional six penalty points. Under the UK's "totting up" procedures, accumulating twelve or more points within a three-year period typically triggers an automatic driving ban. Magistrates in Birmingham have scheduled Antonio's sentencing for June 19, where the potential ban will be formally considered.
Separate London Driving Allegation
In a parallel legal development, Antonio faces another charge from the Metropolitan Police related to an incident in central London. Authorities allege that the footballer, as the registered keeper of a Lamborghini Urus, was involved in an occurrence on Pall Mall at 12.38am on November 5 last year. The Met wrote to Antonio requesting identification of the driver but claim he failed to respond, resulting in a criminal prosecution for failing to report driver details.
Court documents do not elaborate on the specific nature of the alleged incident on Pall Mall. Antonio has entered a not guilty plea to this charge, asserting that "the vehicle was on hire at the time of contravention. I have the hire agreement as proof." This case has been adjourned and is set for a public hearing on July 7 at Bexley Magistrates' Court.
Antonio's Checkered Driving History
The footballer has been notably candid about his turbulent history behind the wheel. In a January interview with the BBC last year, Antonio reflected on the near-fatal Epping Forest Ferrari crash, stating it had given him "another chance at life" after he came "close to dying". He also recounted a bizarre Christmas Day 2019 incident where he crashed a Lamborghini Huracan into a bin shed while dressed in a snowman costume, blaming the mishap on "slippery road" conditions in London.
Throughout his professional career, Antonio has represented several English clubs including Reading, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, and Sheffield Wednesday, before his notable tenure at West Ham and subsequent move to Qatar. These latest legal troubles present a significant off-pitch challenge for the veteran striker as he awaits his fate in the courts.
