London has been named the world's top city for culture in Time Out's Best Cities for Culture 2026 ranking, which surveyed over 24,000 residents worldwide and gathered insights from a panel of experts. The city's diverse communities, historic landmarks, free world-class museums, and legendary theatre scene contributed to its top spot, earning a 95 per cent expert rating and near-unanimous local praise. London's cultural dominance is further reflected in standout scores for theatre, museums, and galleries, with 60 per cent of locals considering it affordable despite its reputation as an expensive city.
Top 20 Cities for Culture
The full ranking includes Paris in second place, followed by New York City, Berlin, Cape Town, Melbourne, São Paulo, Madrid, Florence, and Krakow completing the top ten. Taipei, Marrakesh, Copenhagen, Guadalajara, Athens, Cairo, Beijing, Jaipur, Chiang Mai, and Lisbon round out the top 20.
London's Cultural Highlights
London offers numerous elite galleries and museums that are free to visit, with new world-class institutions opening regularly. The recently opened V&A East and V&A East Storehouse bring cutting-edge relevance to the East End, while the Museum of London will reopen in its new Smithfield location later this year. The West End theatre scene is legendary, featuring A-list acting talent, and free comedy nights provide opportunities to discover emerging talent.
