Social Media Users Stunned by 'Crazy' Javelin Optical Illusion
People across Instagram and Reddit have been left utterly baffled by a perplexing optical illusion that appears to show an Estonian athlete with a javelin thrust directly through his head. The image, which has sparked widespread confusion and debate, depicts a scene that seems both impossible and alarming at first glance.
The Illusion Explained
The photograph, shared widely on social media, features Magnus Kirt, a retired Estonian javelin thrower, in a preparatory stance. At first look, the javelin seems to have pierced the back of his skull and emerged under his right eye, creating a startling visual. However, this is a masterful trick of perspective and lighting.
Upon closer inspection, the part of the javelin that appears to protrude from Kirt's face is actually a shadow cast across his features. The sun's angle aligns perfectly so that the shadow matches the colour and contour of the javelin itself, seamlessly blending to create the illusion of transparency or penetration. This effect is enhanced by the shadow joining up flawlessly with the actual javelin held behind him.
Social Media Reactions
Users on both platforms expressed their bewilderment. One Reddit commenter noted, "That looked like it's lodged into his skull, had to do a double-take." Another admitted, "This took me longer than I’m willing to admit to figure out." A third joked, "Wow! He has terrible aim!"
However, some quickly deciphered the mystery. An Instagram user explained, "I looked at this for a long 10 seconds before realising it's a shadow." A Reddit user added, "He hasn't thrown it yet; he's holding the spear behind him, ready to throw. The part that's on his face is the shadow from the part above his face."
Further discussion highlighted the precision of the illusion. One observer remarked, "Agreed on the need to zoom, but even after you see it, it still looks crazy because the colours match so perfectly between the shadow and spear. Zoomed out it looks as if that part of his face is see-through or transparent or something." Another pointed out, "Also the sun is at the perfect angle for this. Any different and the shadow wouldn't be so well aligned."
Background on the Athlete
Magnus Kirt is a notable figure in athletics, having competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics and won a silver medal at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha. His personal best throw of 90.61 metres remains the Estonian national record. Kirt has since retired from professional sports, but this optical illusion has brought him back into the public eye in an unexpected way.
The image was reportedly discovered after reviewing photographs from one of his competitions, where it stood out as particularly strange. This serves as a reminder of how visual perception can be easily manipulated, even in unedited photographs, leaving viewers both amazed and confused.
