USA Olympic rugby star Ilona Maher experienced a notably awkward encounter with New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart during the Super Bowl week festivities in February. Maher, who captained the USA women's rugby 7s team to a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, recently shared the humorous incident on her family's podcast, revealing she had no idea who the NFL signal caller was.
An Unrecognised Football Star
During Tuesday's episode of the 'House of Maher' podcast with her sisters Olivia and Adrianna, Maher recounted attending a party where numerous New York Giants players were present. She described approaching a blond, attractive young man and initiating conversation with a casual greeting. "Hey what's up man?" Maher recalled saying, before asking if he played football.
Even when Dart confirmed he was indeed a football player, Maher failed to recognise him as the Giants quarterback who completed his rookie season with the team last year. She continued her questioning, asking which team he played for despite being at a party hosted by Giants player Cam Skattebo.
The Quarterback Revelation
"Sweet, man that's awesome. What position are you?" Maher remembered asking, only realising her social misstep when Dart finally revealed he played quarterback. The Olympic bronze medallist admitted to her sisters, "No idea. I mean he knew who I was."
To compound the humbling experience for the Giants players, Maher revealed her friend Casey similarly challenged another quarterback at the same gathering. Casey approached backup quarterback Jameis Winston with a football in hand and asked, "You know ball?" causing Winston to look confused before walking away.
