Keely Hodgkinson Confident of Securing First World Indoor Title

British middle-distance star Keely Hodgkinson has declared herself in peak condition as she targets a maiden world indoor championship gold medal this weekend in Kujawy Pomorze, Poland. The Olympic 800m champion, who shattered the indoor world record last month, expressed bullish optimism about her prospects, stating she "couldn't ask to be in a better position" ahead of the competition.

Record-Breaking Form and Training Momentum

Hodgkinson's confidence stems from her spectacular performance in February, where she obliterated Jolanda Ceplak's long-standing indoor 800m world record by clocking 1:54.87 in Liévin, France. When questioned about whether this achievement had propelled her training to new heights, the 24-year-old responded emphatically. "Yeah, training's gone really well," she confirmed. "I'm very happy with where I am. As you get into an indoor season and you start racing and running faster and the reps get shorter and the recovery gets longer, I think you just naturally come into even more shape, which is obviously really exciting."

Championship Challenges and Rival Absences

While Hodgkinson is the overwhelming favourite for gold, she emphasised that world indoor championships present unique challenges beyond mere speed. "Fast times are obviously really great, but championships are just completely different and having three rounds in three days is another curveball," she explained. "That's really tough. I've done it before. I quite like to have a day off. But I'm looking forward to it and this last month has been great."

Her path to victory received a significant boost when her primary rival, Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia, who finished second behind Hodgkinson at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was among four Ethiopian athletes unable to travel to Poland due to visa complications. Despite this advantage, Hodgkinson remains focused on the demanding schedule and competitive field.

Completing the Medal Collection

A gold medal in Poland would represent a crowning achievement for Hodgkinson, filling the only gap in her illustrious collection. She has previously secured podium finishes at the Olympics, world championships, European championships (both indoor and outdoor), and the Commonwealth Games. However, injuries have thwarted her three previous attempts at the world indoors.

"It's the one medal I don't have so it would be really great to box that one off," Hodgkinson admitted. "Until I've crossed the finish line, I'm not going to jinx anything. But I'm excited to be here and excited to compete." Her heats commence on Friday morning, with the final scheduled for Sunday, offering her the opportunity to cement her status as one of Britain's greatest middle-distance runners.
