Ex-NFL Player Killed in Crash Weeks After Daughter's Birth

The sports world is mourning the tragic loss of former NFL player Chris Payton-Jones, who was killed in a horrific car crash in Florida just weeks after becoming a father. The 30-year-old ex-cornerback died on Saturday when his sedan collided head-on with a pickup truck, causing his vehicle to roll over and burst into flames.

A Life Cut Short

Payton-Jones was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The three passengers in the pickup truck sustained only minor injuries. In the days following his passing, his heartbroken sister Clotea Jones revealed the devastating timing of the tragedy.

'His daughter was born three weeks before he passed,' Clotea told The US Sun. 'He was just excited about being a father. I'm devastated. I'm hurt. My brother is gone. I cannot even cope with the pain.'

Football Career and Legacy

Payton-Jones played in the NFL from 2018 to 2022, appearing for five different teams including the Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders. During his four-year NFL career, he recorded 48 tackles and defended seven passes across 29 games.

After his NFL stint, he continued playing professional football with the XFL's Seattle SeaDragons and the UFL's St Louis Battlehawks from 2022 to 2024. The former Nebraska college star had recently announced his retirement from football, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to play at the highest level.

Remembered as a Special Person

Adam Geis, who coached Payton-Jones at Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, remembered him as an exceptional individual with an elite work ethic. 'He was one of my all-time favorites!' Geis told News4. 'The kid never missed a workout, never missed practice, and never wanted to come off the field. Everyone loved him.'

Geis added that Payton-Jones was 'always unbelievably positive' and that he had never heard him say anything negative about anyone. 'It was always a pleasure to be around him. You were always happy to see him.'

Beyond the Football Field

While still playing professional football, Payton-Jones launched his YouTube channel called Flashflix, which focused on local sports in his hometown of Jacksonville. After returning to Jacksonville, he was frequently seen on the sidelines at Sandalwood High School football games, where he had emerged as a three-star prospect during his own high school career.

At the University of Nebraska, Payton-Jones established himself as an elite cornerback and earned All-Big Ten honorable mention honors in 2016. Despite going undrafted, he was initially signed by the Detroit Lions before being cut at the end of training camp in 2018.

The Arizona Cardinals picked him up later that year, and he appeared in two games during the 2018 season. His most active year came in 2019 when he played in 11 games and started three. From 2020 to 2022, he bounced around the league, appearing in 16 more games before being moved to practice squads.

His sister emphasized that Payton-Jones was excited about where he was in life, particularly about his work with children and the recent birth of his daughter. The tragedy has left his family and the football community grappling with the loss of a young man who had so much ahead of him.
