The city of Birmingham is currently playing host to a spectacular canine invasion as the world-renowned Crufts dog show officially commences. Thousands of dogs, representing an extraordinary array of breeds, shapes, and sizes, have descended upon the National Exhibition Centre for this prestigious annual event. The competition, which runs from Thursday 5th March through to Sunday 8th March 2026, is expected to attract more than 18,000 participating dogs, solidifying its status as the globe's premier canine showcase.
International Flair and Coveted Titles
The Kennel Club has reported a particularly strong international presence this year, with over 4,500 entries arriving from overseas. Competitors have travelled from distant locations including Peru and New Zealand, all united by the ambition to secure the highly coveted 'Best in Show' title. The reigning champion is Miuccia, a four-year-old whippet from Venice, Italy, who claimed the top honour in 2025. Reserve Best in Show last year was awarded to Dzhozias Viking, a Tibetan Mastiff hailing from Romania.
A Packed Schedule of Canine Excellence
The opening day of Crufts is dedicated to celebrating the finest working and pastoral breeds, alongside thrilling displays of obedience, heelwork to music, and the energetic flyball races that always captivate audiences. West Midlands Police will also present a special demonstration showcasing the exceptional work of its dedicated dog unit, which has been rigorously preparing for this exhibition for several weeks.
Friday's schedule will highlight the best terriers and hounds, while Saturday shifts focus to utility and toy breeds. The final day on Sunday will be dominated by gundogs, culminating in the crowning of the 2026 'Best in Show' winner. Throughout the event, dogs will be meticulously groomed and presented, demonstrating the pinnacle of breeding, training, and expert handling.
Broadcast Coverage and Celebrity Hosts
For enthusiasts unable to attend in person, an extensive 17.5 hours of Crufts coverage will be broadcast on Channel 4 and More4, allowing viewers to enjoy the competition's highlights from home. The broadcasting team features a stellar lineup of presenters, including Claudia Winkleman, renowned for her roles on Strictly Come Dancing and The Traitors UK, who will co-host alongside Clare Balding, Ellie Simmonds, and Radzi Chinyanganya.
Winkleman expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "I absolutely love dogs and there is literally nowhere else on earth I'd rather be.
