NRL Star Bradman Best Secures Acting Role in Jeff Fenech Boxing Biopic

Newcastle Knights centre Bradman Best is preparing to trade rugby league boots for a film script, having secured a role in the upcoming biographical film about Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech. The project holds deep personal significance for Best, who is engaged to Fenech's daughter Kayla.

From Football Field to Film Set

The film, titled FENECH – The Jeff Fenech Story, will chronicle Fenech's remarkable journey from the challenging streets of Marrickville to achieving world champion status in boxing. Best has been cast as former world champion Jeff Harding and will appear as a sparring partner in the production.

This casting decision intertwines family connections with sporting narrative. Best and Kayla Fenech announced their engagement earlier this year following a romantic proposal at the picturesque Krinklewood Estate in New South Wales' Hunter Valley. The couple, who have been together for several years, already share a young daughter named Kaliyah, who was present during the proposal moment.

Family Connections and Boxing Pedigree

Jeff Fenech initially hadn't considered Best for the role until the suggestion was made. 'They're looking into whether he could be added to the cast,' Fenech recalled. The idea quickly gained traction, with Fenech later revealing, 'Bradman's in the movie thanks to you! I asked them this afternoon and they thought it was a great idea.'

Fenech described Best's reaction: 'He thought we were just joking at first, but he's wrapt. He can't wait.' The boxing legend has also praised Best's physical capabilities, noting, 'The way he hits, I always tell him, he could fight and beat most of these guys boxing today.'

Beyond family ties, Best brings genuine boxing experience to the role. The 23-year-old athlete trained and fought during his younger years on the Central Coast, providing authentic background for his portrayal of a sparring partner.

Authentic Portrayal of Boxing Legacy

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Matt Norman, the production aims to deliver a raw and uncompromising depiction of Fenech's life, emphasizing the grit, sacrifice, and resilience that defined his championship career. Producers are prioritizing realism by incorporating actual fighters in key roles and avoiding overly choreographed, Hollywood-style fight sequences.

The cast represents a blend of acting talent and sporting figures:

  • Daniel Amalm portraying Jeff Fenech
  • Gary Sweet as legendary trainer Johnny Lewis
  • Tim Tszyu cast as his father, Kostya Tszyu
  • Broadcaster Ben Damon appearing as a commentator
  • Fenech's daughters playing themselves

This approach ensures the film captures the authentic spirit of Australian boxing while telling one of the sport's most compelling personal stories through both professional actors and those with genuine fighting backgrounds.
