Tom Holland has hinted that he may be ready to pass the Spider-Man mantle to a new actor after a decade in the role. The 29-year-old British actor, who first played Peter Parker in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, told Empire magazine that he would be happy to help set up the next chapter for the franchise, whether that involves Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Woman.
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” Holland said. He added that if he could do for the next actor what Robert Downey Jr. did for him—introducing Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe—he would be “so content swinging off into the sunset.”
Holland has not announced any plans to retire from acting, though he previously stated he intends to quit when he starts a family. He is set to become the first Spider-Man actor to headline four solo films with the upcoming Brand New Day, due in UK cinemas on 31 July. The film is set five years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Parker’s loved ones no longer remember him.
Holland revealed that Brand New Day is the first Spider-Man film where he was invited into the writers’ room. He pitched the idea of “Spider-Puberty,” exploring Peter Parker losing control as things change. While the tagline was “immediately shot down,” the kernel of the idea evolved into the final film. He described the movie as “the most emotional Spider-Man movie yet” and “the most grown up.”
The film stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and newcomer Sadie Sink. Holland and Zendaya, who are engaged, will also appear together in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, opening 17 July.
