Speaker Allows Debate on Tory Privileges Inquiry Call

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has confirmed that MPs will have the opportunity to debate a Conservative motion calling for a privileges committee inquiry into Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. The debate is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Speaker's Decision

In a statement to the House, Hoyle explained that he had received letters from various MPs, including the opposition leader. He emphasised that issues of this nature should be referred to the privileges committee sparingly, describing himself as a gatekeeper responsible for preventing frivolous complaints from proceeding.

Hoyle stated that after taking advice, he had decided to allow MPs to make the decision on whether to pursue the matter further. He confirmed that Conservative MP Kemi Badenoch will be able to table a motion for debate tomorrow, which will be held after any statements and urgent questions.
