Platform Changes and Their Impact
The study specifically investigated the effects of X's recent algorithm changes and content moderation policies. Since Elon Musk's acquisition of the platform, researchers noted a shift toward amplifying politically charged content that generates higher engagement through outrage and conflict.
Professor Andrew Przybylski from the University of Oxford, who was not involved in the study, commented on the broader implications. "This isn't just about one platform - it's about how social media architectures are being designed to prioritise engagement over social cohesion," he explained.
The research found that partisan content proved particularly effective at capturing user attention, leading to longer browsing sessions and increased interaction rates. However, this engagement came at the cost of heightened political animosity and decreased willingness to consider opposing viewpoints.
