Rachel Reeves Lashes Out at Donald Trump in Furious Greenland Spat
Reeves Lashes Out at Trump Over Greenland

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has lashed out at Donald Trump in an ongoing spat over Greenland, declaring that the future of the Arctic territory is "not up to the US President." Her remarks came after Mr Trump revived his earlier claim that Greenland "should be controlled by the United States."

Trump Revives Greenland Claim at NATO Summit

Mr Trump made his comments shortly after arriving in Ankara for the annual two-day NATO summit. "Greenland doesn't help Denmark," he told reporters. "Denmark doesn't spend money to really help Greenland, but it's an important part for the United States, and it's surrounded by China's ships and Russian ships." The US President also admitted that his previous designs on Greenland last January—when he refused to rule out using military force to take control of the territory—had "hurt" relations with NATO allies.

Reeves Responds: 'Not Up to the US President'

Speaking to reporters from London, Ms Reeves hit back, saying: "The future of Greenland is up to the people of Greenland and of Denmark, and not up to the US President. I've been very clear about that ever since it was first suggested." The Chancellor's strong stance echoes that of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who clashed with Mr Trump over Greenland earlier this year.

Previous Clash with Starmer

Earlier this year, Mr Trump threatened to impose tariffs on European countries that oppose his demand to take control of Greenland. However, Sir Keir said he "will not yield" to pressure from Mr Trump. The ongoing dispute underscores tensions between the UK and US over Arctic policy and territorial claims.
