Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has resigned as the MP for Clacton but announced his intention to stand as a candidate in the forthcoming by-election. The decision follows scrutiny over undeclared financial support from a convicted fraudster and a previous £5 million gift from a Reform UK donor.
Farage's Announcement and Allegations
In a live broadcast on Tuesday, July 7, Farage stated he was stepping down only to re-enter the race. He defended his actions, asserting, “I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way at all.” The controversy stems from reports that long-term ally George Cottrell provided undeclared funding for security and staffing before Farage was elected.
Labour had called on the Electoral Commission to investigate whether the support should have been declared, given Farage's prominent role in Reform UK prior to returning to frontline politics.
Claims of Establishment Conspiracy
During his statement, Farage alleged that “the establishment” was using “foul means” to undermine Reform UK. He said, “It seems to me that the establishment have now decided that they can’t beat us fairly, so they’ve chosen to use foul means.” He also noted that his personal MP expenses were zero for the first two years, a fact he claimed was ignored by mainstream media.
