New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Sunday that he and a group of Democratic socialist allies who won recent primary elections are delivering a 'national message' to working Americans struggling to make ends meet. His endorsed candidates secured Democratic nominations in three races for New York congressional seats and five state legislature positions in Albany.
Mamdani's Vision for a New Deal Politics
Mamdani stated that collectively, they are bringing a 'New Deal understanding' of Democratic politics to Congress and the national stage. He emphasized that this message speaks to Americans exhausted by the daily struggle to get by. 'We don't have to nationalize that message. That is a national message – it's a national crisis,' Mamdani said.
Moderate Democrats Push Back
In response, 15 self-described 'moderate' Democrats in the U.S. House signed an open letter targeting Mamdani and his allies. 'We are capitalist, not socialist. We are mainstream, not extreme. We are proud, not ashamed, of America,' the letter stated.
Homeland Security Secretary on Migrant Status
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin urged migrants with temporary protected status to seek permanent residence or leave the country. This follows a Supreme Court decision stripping humanitarian protections from hundreds of thousands of immigrants. 'Either try to fill out the paperwork and be here underneath a permanent status or we'll help you get back to your country,' Mullin said. He added that the government would provide a plane ticket and roughly $2,100 to help re-establish. The ruling affects an estimated 350,000 Haitian and 6,000 Syrian immigrants.
Venezuela Earthquake Aftermath
In Venezuela, a father and his teenage son were found alive under rubble four days after twin earthquakes that killed over 1,450 people. Looting occurred in La Guaira, with residents complaining about slow aid. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez praised rescuers, saying, 'Today we have rescued people who are still alive, and therefore these efforts will not be suspended. We always hold on to hope.' A Salvadoran rescue worker cautioned, 'At this point, they are probably dead bodies. Thanks to God maybe we can find people still alive.'
