Massive Security Operation at Incheon Airport

Major security measures have been implemented at Incheon International Airport ahead of the Korea Republic national football team's return from the 2026 World Cup. More than 160 riot officers have been dispatched to the airport, accompanied by 25 special security guards, to prevent any unrest directed at coach Hong Myung-bo, who has received death threats following the team's disappointing campaign.

The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency released a statement confirming the deployment: "We have decided to deploy officers to prevent safety accidents that may occur during the entry process. We will respond strictly to any illegal acts, including the throwing of objects."

Hong Myung-bo Resigns After Group Exit

Hong Myung-bo resigned from his position as head coach after South Korea failed to advance beyond the group stage. The team started promisingly with a 2-1 victory over Czechia, but consecutive 1-0 defeats to Mexico and South Africa ended their tournament. They finished among the bottom third-place sides, failing to reach the knockout rounds.

Hong's resignation makes him the fourth coach to leave his post after a disappointing World Cup in North America. He had previously led South Korea to the 2014 World Cup before stepping down, and returned in 2024 amid accusations of favouritism and lack of transparency in his appointment—claims he denied.

Fan Fury and Presidential Scrutiny

Fans launched a petition demanding Hong's removal, and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung expressed disbelief at the early exit, calling for an investigation. In a scathing post on X, President Lee wrote: "I am not just taken aback by this unexpected outcome, I am utterly baffled. Once again, it has been proven that personnel decisions are everything. When loyalty and factionalism are valued over competence, and an incapable person is appointed as a leader, the outcome is as predictable as fire."

Hong's standing in South Korea fell so dramatically that he was reportedly turned away from shops and restaurants. In his resignation press conference in Mexico, Hong said: "Even though I am leaving the national team, I am not abandoning Korean football altogether. I will cheer for the national team from the bottom of my heart and hope that the team will be trusted and loved by the people once again."
