Showcase Cinemas has announced a unique promotion: anyone named Emily who purchases a ticket to see the new romantic comedy Finding Emily this weekend will receive a free medium-sized Coca-Cola. The offer, which requires photo ID to verify the name, is a creative attempt to boost cinema attendance amid rising competition from streaming services and the cost-of-living crisis.
The Appeal of Named Promotions
While cinemas struggle to draw crowds, this gimmick highlights the value of personalized marketing. The collective viewing experience is often cited as cinema's unique draw, but Showcase has opted for a more targeted approach: a free drink for a select group of moviegoers. The promotion is limited to those named Emily, adding an element of exclusivity.
Potential Backlash
However, the offer could backfire spectacularly. According to NameCensus, there are approximately 138,181 Emilys living in the UK, making it one of the most popular girls' names since the 1980s. With Showcase operating only 16 locations, and an estimated 35,000 Emilys aged 12 and over within reasonable travel distance, the demand could far exceed supply. The cinema chain has a total capacity of around 20,000 seats for Finding Emily this weekend, meaning many Emilys could be turned away.
Logistical Nightmare
If all eligible Emilys attempt to claim their free Coke, chaos may ensue. Furious and thirsty Emilys might storm other screenings, such as The Mandalorian and Grogu, demanding to see the British romcom instead. The risk is particularly high in locations like Dudley, where the auditorium is unusually large, while Southampton's small screen could lead to a pile-up.
A Sensible Outcome?
Hopefully, only a reasonable number of Emilys will take up the offer, preventing a stampede. If successful, Showcase might extend the promotion to other names. For instance, the 11,842 Toms or 527 Jerrys could benefit from future offers tied to Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass. Alternatively, the 1,618 Klaras might get a free drink for Klara and the Sun in October.
Missed Opportunity
Why choose a name as common as Emily? The live-action Moana remake arrives in July, and there are only 67 people named Moana in the UK. Offering them a free drink would generate the same publicity with minimal cost. Showcase's decision seems driven by drama rather than logic, but it certainly gets people talking.
