Mikel Arteta has declared Arsenal ready to harness a 'siege mentality' as they push for the Premier League title, following what he described as an 'extremely disappointing' VAR decision in midweek. The Gunners drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final after a late penalty was overturned.
Arsenal now turn their attention to Saturday's home clash with Fulham, where a win would temporarily move them six points clear of Manchester City, who have two games in hand. Arteta said: 'There is hunger to play, hunger to compete, hunger to win, and hunger to be closer to achieving our dream. We certainly have that siege mentality.'
The Spaniard refused to dwell on the VAR controversy, stating he would deal with UEFA on Monday. 'Emotionally, we have to manage that in the right way. But I would place the emphasis more on desire and determination. We have only four games to play now, this is game two, and everything is at stake.'
Arsenal have been nervous at home recently, suffering a shock defeat to Bournemouth before an unconvincing win over Newcastle. Arteta urged fans to maintain positive support: 'The more we do that, the outcome is going to be much better. I’m sure tomorrow is going to be such a special game.'
Captain Martin Odegaard is expected to be available despite being substituted in Madrid, but Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz remain sidelined.
