Trade minister Chris Bryant has disclosed that the late Queen Elizabeth was 'very keen' for Prince Andrew to be given a role as a trade envoy by the government, despite potential concerns over his suitability.
Minister's Statement
Speaking in response to questions from Labour MP Tracy Baldwin, Bryant confirmed that he had published all relevant documents from that period and found no further evidence of ministerial concerns. He stated: 'The statements that say that ministers were content, I think is the sum total of the response.'
Royal Support
Bryant added that the Palace had made it clear that Her late Majesty was 'very keen' for Andrew to take on the job, and that Andrew himself was eager to accept the position. The role had previously been held by another member of the royal family.
Prince Andrew served as a UK trade envoy from 2001 to 2011, promoting British business interests abroad. However, his tenure later came under scrutiny following his controversial friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
