An urgent recall has been issued for eight children's toys sold by TheKiddoSpace and a metallic cake decorating powder from Crumb Australia, all posing serious health risks to children. The recalls follow reports of toxic substances, choking hazards, and fire risks.
Recalled Items from TheKiddoSpace
The US-based educational toy manufacturer TheKiddoSpace has recalled the following products sold worldwide and online:
- Children's sensory swing: The stretchable fabric can form loops around a child's head or neck, posing a strangulation risk.
- Children's finger-painting kits: Contain methanol, ethylene glycol, and a phthalate, which are hazardous and toxic. Ingestion can cause serious health issues or death; skin contact may cause irritation and swollen lymph nodes.
- Children's talking flashcard toys (rectangular and animal-shaped): The rectangular version's USB cable contains DEHP, a phthalate restricted in the UK to 0.1% concentration, posing reproductive toxicity if chewed. The animal-shaped version's batteries can short-circuit, causing fire or burns; overheating incidents have been reported.
- Children's Christmas Tree Play Set: Contains button batteries that pose choking and internal burn risks if swallowed, and can short-circuit.
- Children's Montessori Egg Puzzle: Small parts pose a choking or suffocation risk if placed in the mouth.
- Children's Peg Dolls in Cups: Small parts are a choking hazard, not complying with Australian toy standards for children up to 36 months.
- Children's sensory story book: Small felt parts can detach, posing a choking or suffocation risk.
- LED soccer hover ball (small, 5.5"): Batteries may overheat, causing burns or fire; consumer reports of overheating and burning smell.
Advice for Parents
Parents should immediately confiscate these toys. For a refund from TheKiddoSpace, take a photo of the toy with 'recalled' written on it, then dispose of it. Email the photo to TheKiddoSpace for a full refund. For the swing, cut the fabric in half and submit a photo of the destroyed item.
Metallic Cake Decorating Powder by Crumb Australia
All colours of Crumb Australia's metallic cake decorating powder have been recalled after 14-month-old Dustin Wildman inhaled the powder, leading to a medically induced coma and surgery to remove solidified paste from his lungs. The powder contains copper and zinc compounds, toxic if inhaled or ingested. The products were sold in Australia and internationally from August 1, 2019, to May 6, 2026. Dustin has since recovered but has lifelong lung injuries. Anyone with the product should dispose of it immediately.
