A shocking security breach unfolded at India's Supreme Court on Wednesday when an unidentified man hurled a shoe toward Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud during a crucial hearing. The incident occurred while the court was addressing a petition concerning the controversial sterilisation of stray dogs in Maharashtra.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the projectile narrowly missed the Chief Justice, who was presiding over the bench. "The shoe landed just short of the dais," one court official reported, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Security personnel immediately restrained the individual."
Immediate Response and Investigation
Court security swiftly apprehended the man, identified only as a resident of Maharashtra state. The individual was removed from the courtroom while shouting unintelligible remarks toward the bench. Delhi Police have launched a full investigation into the motive behind the attack and how security protocols were compromised.
This isn't the first security scare for the Indian judiciary. The incident bears resemblance to a similar shoe-throwing episode in 2022, when another individual targeted Justice Chandrachud during proceedings related to the controversial hijab ban in educational institutions.
Broader Security Concerns
The repeated breaches have raised serious questions about protection measures within India's highest judicial institution. Legal experts and security analysts are calling for an immediate review of courtroom access protocols and screening procedures.
Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan commented: "While we must ensure courts remain accessible to citizens, the safety of our judges cannot be compromised. This incident demands urgent security upgrades."
The Supreme Court registry has assured that comprehensive security reviews are underway, with findings expected to be implemented across all court facilities nationwide. Meanwhile, judicial proceedings have resumed with enhanced protective measures.
