A British Member of Parliament has issued a stark warning about home security after a delivery driver let himself into his family house unannounced.
The Terrifying Incident
James McMurdock, the MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock and a father-of-four, experienced what he describes as a terrifying encounter at his Essex home. The incident occurred last night, prompting the politician to share his shock publicly on social media platform X.
According to Mr McMurdock, an Amazon delivery driver approached his front door, checked the handle, and pushed his way inside without invitation. The MP was present and immediately confronted the man, but the experience left him deeply shaken about what might have happened had he not been there.
Family Safety Concerns and Police Response
The politician expressed particular concern for the safety of his wife and teenage daughter. "What if my wife or teenage daughter had been standing in my place?" he questioned in his social media post, highlighting the vulnerability many families might feel.
Perhaps more alarming was the response Mr McMurdock received when he reported the incident to police. He claims officers told him that "Trespass is a civil matter. There's nothing we can do." This legal position has sparked his determination to push for change in Parliament.
Call for Parliamentary Action
Mr McMurdock has vowed to raise the issue in Parliament, stating he will not wait for someone to be harmed before action is taken. He specifically questioned the screening processes for temporary delivery drivers hired during peak periods and the message current trespass laws send to those with bad intentions.
"If the law fails to protect people in their own homes, then the law must change," the MP concluded forcefully. The Mirror has contacted James McMurdock, Essex Police and Amazon for comment regarding the unsettling event.
