A planned gathering of Trump supporters at Disneyland in California, scheduled for the same day as a long-running LGBTQ+ friendly event, has ignited controversy and debate online.
Clashing Calendars at the 'Happiest Place on Earth'
The Southern California-based 805 Patriots have announced a 'peaceful, family-oriented meetup' at Disneyland Park in Anaheim for February 28, 2026. The group, which promotes merchandise with the slogan 'MAKE DISNEY GREAT AGAIN', insists the event is strictly recreational and not a protest.
However, the chosen date coincides with a 'Mini Gay Days' gathering organised by Gay Days Anaheim, which has held annual events at the park since 1998. The 805 Patriots acknowledged this overlap, calling it 'coincidental' and stating both groups intend to enjoy the park without interference.
Political Motives and Online Backlash
Despite the group's official stance, comments from organisers and supporters have painted a more politically charged picture. In response to learning about the scheduling conflict, the Patriots group reportedly said: 'Well, we didn't plan this at all but will make this even more fun now.'
Further remarks on the group's Facebook page stated the aim was 'to go have some fun by triggering as many liberals as possible' and to give conservative families a chance to visit. This language has drawn sharp criticism from the LGBTQ+ community.
Eddie Shapiro, a spokesperson for Gay Days Anaheim, reaffirmed their commitment to the event, stating: 'We aren’t stopping now and we expect, as we always do, to have a joyous time in the parks.'
Disney's Rules and the Spectre of Disruption
The 805 Patriots have stressed that signs, flags, and 'any form of disruptive conduct' are prohibited, and attendees must follow all Disneyland guidelines. Disneyland's dress code does not explicitly ban politically affiliated clothing but reserves the right to deny entry to anyone wearing attire deemed disruptive to the guest experience.
Online, the situation has sparked heated discussion. Some MAGA supporters welcomed the overlap, while supporters of Gay Days expressed concern. Some advised wearing Pride merchandise and showing love, while others warned that Disney staff would quickly eject anyone causing a disruption, potentially with a lifetime ban.
The debate occurs against a backdrop of longstanding complaints from some conservatives about Disney's perceived alliance with the LGBTQ+ community. Both Disneyland and the 805 Patriots have been contacted for further comment.
