Caitlyn Jenner has disclosed that she personally wrote to former President Donald Trump, pleading for assistance after her passport gender marker was unexpectedly changed back to male. The 76-year-old former Olympic athlete explained that her identification now lists her sex as 'M', contradicting all her legally updated documents that affirm her transition.
Documentation Challenges for Transgender Individuals
During an appearance on Tomi Lahren's podcast, Jenner emphasized the critical importance of accurate identification in daily life. "Today, documentation is extremely important. Every time you turn around, you gotta show ID, ID, ID," she stated. "So somebody in my position, who has transitioned, I worked very, very hard. I worked with a law firm to make sure everything was changed from 'M' to 'F,' right down to my birth certificate."
Jenner detailed that all her documentation, including her passport and Global Entry status, had been correctly updated, allowing her to travel internationally without issue. The problem emerged only after her passport expired and was renewed, resulting in the gender marker reverting to male.
Failed Attempts and Direct Appeal to Trump
As a supporter of Trump, Jenner initially tried to resolve the matter independently by submitting official paperwork, including a hard copy of her amended birth certificate, to the State Department. "I did everything," she recounted. "And they sent it back, M, they didn't change it." Faced with this bureaucratic impasse, she highlighted the safety concerns involved, asking, "What do I do? This is a safety factor."
Her efforts culminated in a direct appeal to Trump during a visit to Mar-a-Lago two months ago. Jenner wrote a letter explaining how the issue affected her and many others, which was handed to Secret Service agents to place on Trump's desk. However, she has not received a response, acknowledging that "He's kind of busy right now. My gender marker is not big on the issue, OK?"
Context of Trump's Executive Order
This situation follows Trump's executive order, signed on his first day back in office, which mandates that only two genders, male and female, be recognized. The order asserts that government-issued identification should reflect a person's sex "at conception," criticizing what it describes as ideologues denying biological reality.
In response, the State Department has suspended processing passport applications for gender marker changes. Jenner insists she complied with all requirements but was still unable to correct her passport, clarifying that she does not blame Trump. "I'm not blaming him whatsoever. I love the guy, and I love what he's doing," she affirmed.
Broader Implications and Similar Cases
Jenner's experience is not isolated. Other prominent transgender figures, such as Euphoria star Hunter Schafer, have reported similar problems with passports being amended to reflect sex at birth rather than gender identity. According to the Williams Institute, an estimated 476,000 transgender adults in the United States lack identification documents that accurately reflect their gender marker.
Mismatched identification can lead to significant complications in various scenarios, including:
- Traveling through airports and border controls
- Passing security checks and screenings
- Verifying identity in everyday transactions and interactions
The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment on this matter, leaving the issue unresolved for Jenner and others facing similar challenges.
