Robert Shealey Jr., a 25-year-old former member of the National Guard, was shot and killed in Winter Park, Florida, just one day after trying to de-escalate a fight on a basketball court, according to statements from his grieving family. The incident occurred on April 17 in the Orlando area, with the Orange County Sheriff's Office confirming that deputies responded to the scene at 8:30 pm.
Family Mourns a Life Dedicated to Helping Others
Shealey Jr.'s mother, Chiniqua "Star" Williams, described her son as a peacemaker who consistently sought to resolve conflicts. "He kept trying to help everywhere he went, and he tried to diffuse an argument or fight," she told local media. "Then this young man comes in and guns my baby down like a terrorist." His father, Robert Shealey Sr., expressed profound grief, noting he had not slept for three days since the tragedy.
Shealey Sr. emphasized that his son was in a safe environment at the time of the shooting. "He was at the basketball court…he wasn't at a club, he wasn't in a gang," he said. "He was where he was supposed to be, just shooting ball." The family revealed that Shealey Jr. had served four years in the National Guard before leaving due to an injury sustained in the line of duty. He had plans to attend Seminole State College in the upcoming academic year.
Community Outcry and Calls for Justice
Local Pastor Jake Stovall, who lost his own daughter to gun violence six years ago, joined the family in demanding justice. "This is a senseless death," Stovall stated. "We are all hurt and devastated because this continues to happen." The Orange County Sheriff's Office reported that the investigation remains ongoing but is still in its early stages, with no further details released at this time.
In response to the killing, the family organized a candlelight vigil and balloon release scheduled for Monday at 6:30 pm. Attendees were asked to bring red balloons and wear red in honor of Shealey Jr., symbolizing their collective mourning and call for action against such violence.
