An autopsy of James 'Jimmy' Gracey, the University of Alabama student found dead in Barcelona, has revealed injuries consistent with repeatedly hitting the rocks of a breakwater, according to Spanish media. Police sources told the Associated Press that all signs point to the 20-year-old's death being an accident.
Gracey was last seen outside the Shoko nightclub at around 3am on Tuesday. He failed to return to the rental where he was staying with friends during spring break. His body was recovered Thursday afternoon in 13-foot deep waters off a beach near the club.
Surveillance footage captured Gracey walking alone toward a dock and falling into the water without third-party involvement, El País reported. A preliminary autopsy report filed in court rules out foul play and supports the accidental drowning hypothesis, according to El Periódico. The report also documented injuries consistent with hitting breakwater rocks; toxicology results are pending.
During the search, police found Gracey's phone in the possession of a known thief, but investigators ruled out any connection to his death. His wallet and clothes were also found, narrowing the search area. Gracey's parents have traveled to Barcelona, and his body will be released after toxicology tests.
A family statement described Gracey as a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and asked for prayers and privacy. The University of Alabama expressed heartbreak over the loss, offering condolences to the family.
