US Clarifies Iran Players Welcome at 2026 World Cup Amid Italy Replacement Talk
US: Iran Players Welcome at 2026 World Cup

The United States has clarified its stance on Iran's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating that Iranian athletes are welcome to compete on American soil, though individuals with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) may face entry denial. This clarification follows a proposal by Paolo Zampolli, an envoy to former President Donald Trump, suggesting that Italy replace Iran due to unresolved tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Mixed Signals from Trump

Last month, Donald Trump offered mixed signals regarding Iran's involvement. He stated that Iran was “welcome” to participate but also suggested that their presence could be “inappropriate” for safety reasons, while reiterating a desire not to penalize the athletes themselves. The conflicting remarks sparked uncertainty over whether Iran would be permitted to enter the US for the tournament.

US Secretary of State's Clarification

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has now clarified the official position. He confirmed that Iranian players are welcome, but warned that individuals associated with the IRGC may be denied entry. This distinction aims to address security concerns without punishing the entire team.

FIFA and Iran Respond

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has firmly stated that Iran will “for sure” participate in the 2026 World Cup, dismissing any notion of their exclusion. An Iranian government spokesperson also confirmed that preparations for the tournament are underway, underscoring Tehran's expectation of participation.

Italy's Rejection

Italy's sports minister, Andrea Abodi, emphatically dismissed the idea of Italy replacing Iran, asserting that such a move is neither “possible” nor “appropriate”. He stressed that qualification must be earned through on-pitch performance, not political maneuvering.

The 2026 World Cup, to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature an expanded format with 48 teams. Iran has already secured its place through qualifying matches, and the US clarification appears to pave the way for their participation, barring individual vetting issues.
