Trump-Pardoned Capitol Rioter Receives Life Sentence for Child Sex Abuse

A Florida man previously pardoned by former US President Donald Trump for his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot has been sentenced to spend the remainder of his life in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing two children. Andrew Paul Johnson, aged 45, was found guilty last month on charges of molesting a child under 12 and another under 16.

Life Sentence Imposed for Heinous Crimes

The State Attorney for Florida's Fifth Judicial Circuit's Office announced on Thursday that Johnson received a life sentence. Prosecutors detailed how Johnson exploited his position as a father figure to sexually assault the victims and send them inappropriate messages. The abuse came to light after the mother of one victim discovered explicit communications.

According to victim testimony reported by NPR, Johnson attempted to coerce silence by promising millions of dollars he claimed to expect from the Trump administration related to the Capitol riot. "He said not to tell anybody," one victim stated. Another expressed fear and confusion, noting, "we were scared and didn't realize that this stuff was not okay because we were 12 years old."

Pattern of Abuse and Manipulation

The victims, a boy and a girl, described how Johnson entered their lives after meeting the boy's mother at a political rally in 2023. The mother allowed Johnson, who worked as a handyman, to stay in their home. The boy, then 11, testified about waking up to Johnson touching him inappropriately while they slept on the couch after watching a movie. "I felt him touching me in my private area," he said, adding he was "too nervous and scared" to speak up.

When similar incidents occurred later, Johnson explicitly instructed the minor to keep quiet. The abuse extended to the boy's best friend, a 12-year-old girl, with Johnson exposing himself to both children on multiple occasions.

Connection to January 6 and Presidential Pardon

Federal prosecutors confirmed Johnson participated in the Capitol riot by marching through a smashed window. In August 2024, he was sentenced to one year in prison for this role, but received an immediate pardon when Trump took office for his second term, as part of clemency granted to over 1,500 individuals charged in connection with January 6.

After his release, Johnson resumed abusing the boy and began targeting the girl. Law enforcement recovered a cell phone Johnson gave to a victim for communication, and found sexually explicit messages sent via the Discord platform. Police noted Johnson tried to move conversations to a more private app and urged victims to delete messages, but deputies photographed the evidence.

Silencing Tactics and Legal Proceedings

Both victims reported that Johnson used gifts and food to try to silence them, warning he would "get in trouble" if they spoke out. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office confirmed complaints from both children about inappropriate touching. In interviews, the girl described initial reluctance to disclose the abuse due to fear, but eventually confessed when pressed by the boy's mother.

Johnson pleaded not guilty to five charges, including molestation, lewd exhibition, and transmission of harmful material to minors. He is among at least 33 January 6 participants who have reoffended after being pardoned, according to a report by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

The Daily Mail has contacted the State Attorney's office for further comment on the case, which highlights the severe consequences of Johnson's actions beyond his political crimes.
