An unidentified vessel was boarded by 'unauthorised personnel' off the UAE port of Fujairah, near the Strait of Hormuz, and redirected towards Iran, according to the British maritime security agency UKMTO. This incident occurred just hours after an Indian-flagged wooden cargo vessel sank in Omani waters following a fire, suspected to be from a drone or missile strike.
Iran's Growing Influence in the Strait
Iran is reportedly making deals for ship passage through the Strait of Hormuz, with its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claiming that 30 vessels had crossed since Wednesday morning. Iran's Fars news agency reported an agreement allowing some Chinese ships to pass through the vital waterway.
International Response
US President Donald Trump discussed the crisis with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with both leaders agreeing that the Strait should remain open and Iran should not acquire nuclear weapons. The situation remains tense as the US and Iran continue talks over the nuclear programme.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, and any disruption could have significant economic consequences. The UKMTO has urged caution to all vessels in the region.
