Newly emerged video footage shows pro-Palestinian activists carrying out a vandalism attack on the Glasgow offices of an insurance company, with the group alleging business connections to Israel. The incident, which took place in the early hours of Thursday morning, involved three hooded and masked individuals targeting the Sentinel building on Waterloo Street, home to the Glasgow branch of insurance firm Chubb.
Details of the Vandalism Incident
The video captures the activists spray-painting slogans such as "Chubb insures genocide" and "drop Elbit" on the building's glass panels. Subsequently, one of the individuals retrieved a sledgehammer from a backpack and used it to smash multiple windows. In a further act of defacement, a red fire extinguisher was pulled from the backpack and deployed to spray what appeared to be red paint onto the structure.
Additional Actions and Security Response
The other two activists were seen striking the glass panels with smaller hammers during the assault. At one point in the footage, a security guard inside the building can be observed speaking on the phone and seemingly gesturing away from the premises, indicating an attempt to alert authorities or manage the situation from within.
Background on the Targeted Companies
Elbit Systems Ltd, referenced in the spray-painted messages, is an Israel-based international military technology company and defence contractor. According to a spokesperson for the unnamed activist group, Chubb provides employer liability insurance to Elbit and its subsidiary, UAV Engines, which manufactures engines for unmanned aerial drones.
Activist Statements and Motivations
The spokesperson stated, "Civilians in Palestine, Lebanon and Iran continue to be killed by the US and Israel, and those who profit continue with impunity." They emphasised that the action in Glasgow was intended to disrupt Chubb Insurance's operations and expose its role in what they describe as facilitating war crimes. The group warned they will "continue to target these companies until they drop their support for the Israeli death machine."
Pattern of Similar Attacks
This incident follows a series of similar vandalism attacks earlier this year, where Chubb's offices in London, Birmingham, and Manchester were also targeted by activists. The recurring nature of these protests highlights ongoing tensions and activist efforts to pressure companies over perceived ties to Israeli military operations.
The vandalism has drawn attention to the broader debate over corporate involvement in conflict zones, with activists leveraging direct action to amplify their message against insurance and defence industry linkages.
