Miami Beach officials have declared a state of emergency and imposed a strict midnight curfew after violent incidents marred this year's Spring Break celebrations. The city's mayor, along with local law enforcement, announced the measures following chaotic scenes involving large crowds, fights, and gunfire.
The emergency order, effective immediately, prohibits public alcohol consumption and enforces a midnight to 6 am curfew in the South Beach entertainment district. Police reported multiple arrests over the weekend, including two firearms-related incidents that left bystanders injured.
Crackdown on Unruly Behaviour
"We will not tolerate lawlessness in our city," stated Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner during a press conference. "The safety of our residents and visitors is paramount, and these measures will help restore order."
The decision comes after years of escalating problems during the annual Spring Break period, which attracts thousands of college students to Florida's beaches. Local businesses expressed mixed reactions, with some supporting the crackdown while others worry about lost revenue.
Enhanced Security Measures
Authorities have deployed additional police officers and implemented the following security enhancements:
- Increased patrols in high-traffic areas
- Bag checks at beach access points
- DUI checkpoints throughout the city
- Temporary closure of sidewalk cafes after 6 pm
Tourism officials emphasize that Miami Beach remains open to responsible visitors, but warn that disruptive behaviour will face immediate consequences. The curfew is expected to remain in place through the end of March.
