Republican lawmakers have launched a scathing attack on the Biden administration, condemning what they describe as "appalling" conditions in US immigration detention centres. A delegation of GOP representatives visited several facilities and reported severe overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and unsanitary conditions.
Delegation's Findings
The lawmakers claimed detainees were being held in cramped spaces with limited access to basic hygiene, while some reportedly suffered from untreated medical conditions. "This is a humanitarian crisis," one Republican congressman stated.
Political Backlash
The criticism comes amid ongoing debates over US immigration policy, with Republicans accusing President Biden of failing to secure the border while the White House maintains it is working to improve conditions. Immigration advocates have long raised concerns about detention centre standards.
Administration Response
The Department of Homeland Security has acknowledged challenges but emphasised recent improvements, including increased oversight and reduced detainee numbers compared to previous administrations.
