Travel Expert Updates EES Situation for Greece, Portugal, and Germany
EES Update: Greece, Portugal, Germany Travel Advice

Travel expert Simon Calder has issued an update for British holidaymakers planning trips to Greece, Portugal, and Germany, amid ongoing concerns about the European Union's new Entry/Exit System (EES). The system, designed to replace traditional passport stamps with biometric checks, has caused significant delays at some borders due to the time required for photographing and fingerprinting travellers.

Current Situation in Greece, Portugal, and Germany

Greece has confirmed that British visitors will not face the new system throughout the summer months. Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni stated in a BBC interview that checks should take 'less than a couple of minutes.' However, reports from Portugal and Germany indicate persistent queues. Simon Calder, speaking during an Instagram live session, shared firsthand accounts: 'A guy today said he just arrived in Lisbon, about one-third of the way to the front of the queue, and he'd been there an hour. So things are not going at all well.' Another traveller reported that Frankfurt airport was enforcing fingerprinting and photographing on all arrivals and departures, despite this not aligning with official rules.

Greece's Stance and Implications

Greece remains a top destination for British tourists, and the government is keen to avoid a drop in visitor numbers. Calder noted that the fact Greece has not been penalised for opting out suggests the situation may remain unchanged for the summer. He added: 'I think most other countries will try to pay lip service to the basic idea. Some will be full on, sticking to the rules, while others will ease up when things get tricky.'

What This Means for Travellers

While the EES is gradually being implemented across the Schengen area, which includes 27 European countries, the Republic of Ireland and Cyprus are exempt. Calder advises travellers to be prepared for potential delays, especially at airports with limited facilities, such as those on Greek islands. He warned: 'You really want to avoid stories of great long queues to get in and people missing planes to get out.'

In conclusion, while the EES poses a potential hazard, British visitors to Greece can expect a smoother process this summer. However, travellers to other Schengen countries should remain vigilant and allow extra time for border checks.
