Thousands Gather in Derry for Vigil Honoring Murdered Mother-of-Two Amy Doherty

Thousands of people assembled in Derry on Friday evening for a solemn vigil in memory of Amy Doherty, a 28-year-old mother-of-two whose tragic death has sparked widespread grief and calls for justice. The crowd converged at the Guildhall, carrying flowers and purple balloons in a poignant tribute, just hours after a man appeared in court charged with her murder.

Emotional Plea from Amy's Mother

During an emotional address to the large gathering, Amy's mother, Sharon, expressed her profound sorrow, stating that her daughter had been "brutally taken from us and her babies." She emphasized that she did not want Amy's death, along with the murders of 29 other women in Northern Ireland, to be "in vain." Sharon thanked the attendees for their support, declaring, "All we want is justice for Amy." In a symbolic gesture, the family released balloons into the sky to honor Amy and other women who have been killed in the region.

Court Proceedings and Charges

Earlier on Friday, Connor McNamee, 30, of Summer Meadow Mews in Derry, appeared at Londonderry Magistrates' Court via videolink. He was charged with:

  • Murder, with court papers indicating the charge was aggravated by domestic abuse.
  • Possession of an offensive weapon, specifically a kitchen knife.
  • Possession of a class A controlled drug, cocaine.

No bail application was made, and McNamee was remanded in custody until April 23. The charges stem from an incident on Saturday, March 21, 2026, when police were called to a property in the Summer Meadows Mews area and found Ms. Doherty badly injured. She was taken to the hospital but later died from her injuries.

Remembering Amy's Life and Legacy

At her funeral on Thursday, March 26, 2026, Amy was remembered as a "dedicated" care worker with a "magnetic personality" that drew people to her. An order of service displayed a picture of her with her children, Rhea and Ronan, highlighting her role as a loving mother. Her death, along with other high-profile cases, has ignited urgent discussions on women's and girls' safety in Northern Ireland, prompting calls for systemic changes to prevent such tragedies.

Broader Context of Violence Against Women

This case is part of a disturbing pattern of violence against women in Northern Ireland. Earlier this month, another man appeared in court charged with the murder of 23-year-old Ellie Flanagan in Co Fermanagh. Additionally, in 2022, the partner of Natalie McNally was found guilty of her murder in Lurgan when she was 15 weeks pregnant. These incidents underscore the pressing need for enhanced protections and awareness campaigns to address domestic abuse and gender-based violence in the community.
