A police officer in Salinas, California, has been arrested and charged with felony possession of child sexual abuse material, authorities announced.
Arrest and Charges
Brian Jimenez-Gomez, 25, a Salinas police officer, was taken into custody and charged after an investigation by the San Jose Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The Salinas Police Department received information about potential criminal conduct late last year and immediately referred the matter to the task force. Jimenez-Gomez was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Details of the Allegations
Authorities clarified that the charge does not allege any physical contact with a minor or that the officer created the material. Currently, there are no known local victims, and officials stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.
If convicted, Jimenez-Gomez could face a sentence ranging from probation to two years in state prison. Additionally, he would be required to register as a sex offender for life.
Department Response
Salinas Police Chief Carlos Acosta emphasized the department's commitment to transparency and accountability. "We are dedicated to thoroughly investigating all allegations of misconduct," Acosta said. The department has cooperated fully with the task force and will continue to support the legal process.
The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation and holds law enforcement officers to the highest standards of conduct.
