Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to Depart Agency Amid Immigration Crackdown Scrutiny
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to Depart Agency in May

The acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Todd Lyons, will depart the federal government at the end of May, the administration confirmed on Thursday. Lyons is set to step down on May 31 and transition to a role in the private sector, according to a statement from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

Scrutiny Over Immigration Enforcement Operations

ICE, which operates under the Department of Homeland Security, has been a focal point of President Donald Trump's renewed immigration crackdown. The agency has faced significant criticism, including allegations of free speech violations and denial of due process rights. Human rights advocates argue that these issues have raised concerns about public safety and accountability, particularly in minority communities.

President Trump maintains that the crackdown is essential for improving domestic security and curbing illegal immigration. However, the agency's operations have come under intense scrutiny following fatal shootings in Minnesota involving federal immigration officers earlier this year.

Fatal Incidents and Legal Charges

The deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota sparked widespread protests and heightened scrutiny of ICE's enforcement tactics. In a related development, prosecutors in Minnesota charged an ICE agent with assault on Thursday for allegedly pointing his gun at people in a car along a highway in Minneapolis in February.

Prosecutors noted that these charges mark the first against an ICE officer over actions linked to the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in Minnesota this year. The accused agent claimed to state investigators that he had "feared for his safety" during the incident.

Lyons' Career and Leadership at ICE

Before his appointment as acting chief of ICE in March 2025, Todd Lyons served as the executive associate director of the agency's Enforcement and Removal Operations directorate. In this capacity, he led efforts to arrest and remove migrants who entered the United States illegally, as detailed in his official biography.

Lyons held various other roles within the Enforcement and Removal Operations directorate, including assistant director of field operations and deputy assistant director of western operations and the southwest border. He began his career with the directorate as an immigration enforcement agent in Dallas.

In his statement, Secretary Markwayne Mullin praised Lyons, calling him "a great leader." The departure of Lyons comes at a critical time for ICE, as the agency navigates ongoing controversies and the broader political landscape surrounding immigration policy.
