Trump to Meet NYC Mayor-Elect Mamdani After Months of Feuding
Trump Confirms Oval Office Meeting with Mamdani

In a surprising political development, former President Donald Trump has confirmed he will host New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani for a meeting in the Oval Office this Friday. The announcement comes after months of public antagonism between the two political figures.

From Political Rivals to Meeting Partners

The scheduled sit-down represents a significant shift in dynamics between the Republican leader and the Democratic socialist, who have repeatedly clashed throughout Mamdani's campaign. Trump announced the meeting via social media on Wednesday night, using the mayor-elect's full name and placing his middle name 'Kwame' in quotation marks.

Trump stated that Mamdani had requested the meeting, promising that further details would follow. The former president told reporters on Sunday evening that they would "work something out," while Mamdani confirmed on Monday that his team had reached out to the White House to arrange a potential meeting.

Months of Antagonism Precede Unexpected Meeting

The relationship between Trump and Mamdani has been notably contentious. Trump repeatedly labelled Mamdani a 'communist' during the campaign and predicted disastrous consequences for New York City if the democratic socialist were elected. In particularly harsh rhetoric, Trump threatened to deport Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and became a naturalised American citizen in 2018, and suggested pulling federal funding from the city.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old who rose from relative obscurity as a Queens state lawmaker to mayor-elect of America's largest city in just months, has responded with his own strong positions. During his victory speech earlier this month, he expressed his intention for New York to demonstrate how to defeat the president's agenda.

Shifting Political Strategies Post-Election

The timing of this meeting follows significant Republican losses in November elections across several states including Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Notably, Trump has recently begun embracing affordability as a key talking point, mirroring language that had been central to Democratic campaigns.

Last week, Trump declared on social media that Republicans were the "Party of Affordability!" This shift comes despite the president and his party simultaneously insisting that the economy has never been stronger.

According to Mamdani spokesperson Dora Pekec, the meeting follows "customary" protocol for an incoming New York City mayor to meet with the president. She indicated that Mamdani plans to discuss public safety, economic security, and the affordability agenda that secured votes from over one million New Yorkers just two weeks ago.

Mamdani, who officially takes office in January, has spoken about "Trump-proofing" New York while simultaneously expressing willingness to work with anyone - including the president - if it benefits New York residents.
