Sarina Wiegman has named her latest England squad for the upcoming Women's World Cup qualifiers, with midfielder Ella Toone making her return after recovering from a hip injury. Toone has not featured for the Lionesses since November, and her recall marks a significant boost for the team as they prepare for a crucial clash against Spain.
Wiegman on Toone's Return
Wiegman expressed optimism about Toone's fitness, stating that she “looks good” in training. However, the manager remained cautious about the midfielder's playing time, acknowledging that some players may be short on match fitness. Decisions on starting line-ups and minutes will be made closer to the matches.
Lucy Bronze Also Included
Defender Lucy Bronze has also been named in the 25-player squad despite recent concerns over a foot injury. Wiegman expressed confidence in the quality of her selected players, even if some have had limited game time recently. The squad is packed with experience and talent, ready to take on the world champions.
Key Qualifier Against Spain
The Lionesses will travel to Majorca to face current world champions Spain on 5 June. A draw would be sufficient to secure England's qualification for next year's World Cup, following their perfect record of four wins from four qualifiers. Wiegman emphasised the team's proactive approach, stating that their primary goal is to “play to win” against Spain and improve upon previous performances.
After the Spain match, England will face Ukraine four days later in another qualifier. The team is determined to maintain their winning momentum and secure their place at the World Cup.
