Jack Schlossberg, the 33-year-old grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, has firmly asserted that his political career is not being aided by his status as a scion of one of America's most renowned and influential dynasties. He is currently running for a fiercely contested Congressional seat in Manhattan, where recent polling data reveals he has unexpectedly surged into the lead.
Campaign Boost from Television Series
Schlossberg's campaign received an unforeseen lift from the popularity of the hit TV show 'Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette,' which premiered in February and reignited public fascination with his family. Despite this, the political heir has openly criticised the series, stating that its creators 'know nothing' about the Kennedy saga, even as many observers attribute the increased buzz around his candidacy to the show's success.
Downplaying Family Legacy
In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Schlossberg once again attempted to minimise the significance of his family name to his early political achievements, insisting that the excitement surrounding his campaign is entirely organic. 'They don’t just like me because I’m a Kennedy. Ask them how they feel about RFK Jr.,' he remarked, referencing his first cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a member of Trump's cabinet. 'They like me because of my experience, my ideas and they trust me because they see what’s going on with their very own eyes.'
Polling Lead and High-Profile Endorsements
Despite critics pointing to his lack of requisite experience for Congress, Schlossberg has secured several high-profile endorsements, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. According to the most recent poll, commissioned by one of his main opponents, attorney and commentator George Conway, Schlossberg leads with 25 percent support compared to Conway's 16 percent. He is also competing against New York Assembly Members Micah Lasher and Alex Bores, both of whom registered 11 percent in the poll, as reported by Patch.com.
Positioning as an Outsider
Schlossberg has sought to reframe his absence of political or business background as an advantage, portraying himself as an outsider with a substantial social media following capable of energising young voters. 'I’m the only one who has engaged millions of people on a progressive and aggressive political message,' he declared in his AP interview. 'I’m not just an influencer who’s hawking products. I make informative videos.'
Controversial Remarks and Media Tactics
The Kennedy heir has previously attracted backlash for outlandish and sometimes crude comments, such as telling Megyn Kelly to show her genitals after she shared a video criticising Benjamin Netanyahu. His informative videos have included instances like donning a blonde wig to mock First Lady Melania Trump's letter to Vladimir Putin in November 2025, ridiculing her European accent.
Criticism of the Love Story Series
Despite the show's role in boosting his name recognition since his campaign launch late last year, Schlossberg has made no secret of his disdain for 'Love Story.' He unleashed a furious tirade against show creator Ryan Murphy, accusing him of exploiting his family for profit. 'If you want to know someone who's never met anyone in my family, knows nothing about us, talk to Ryan Murphy,' he told CBS Sunday Morning. 'I want people who watch it to watch it with one letter in mind and that's a capital F, for fiction.'
Opponent's Perspective
While Schlossberg strives to downplay the importance of his family name, his opponent George Conway has slammed the Kennedy heir, arguing that his lineage is his sole source of support. 'There’s something very appealing about a young, fresh face and I think he’s very smart to play that up,' Conway said. 'But I also think there’s something to be said for an older, experienced fresh face and that’s what I’m trying to be.'
Schlossberg has not entirely distanced himself from the hype generated by the series, even utilising it for a social media political promotion last month, where he shared images of himself alongside JFK Jr. on Instagram, claiming he is 'hotter' than his famous uncle. As the race for New York's prized 12th congressional district intensifies, Schlossberg continues to navigate the dual dynamics of his inherited legacy and his self-proclaimed organic appeal.
