Prime Minister Andy Burnham triggered a wave of viewer complaints just seconds into his interview on Good Morning Britain on Monday (October 26), after ruling out an early general election.
Appearing alongside presenters Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid ahead of the Autumn Budget on Wednesday, the MP for Makerfield was set to discuss a range of issues, including new funding to tackle homelessness. However, before those topics were addressed, Reid asked: "Are you softening us all up for an early general election?"
Burnham responded: "No, I've ruled that out." When Reid pressed, "Have you absolutely ruled that out?", he replied: "I have. I did that before the Labour conference because I just don't think people want another backward-looking squabble. They want me to get on with the job, and making life better for people, which is what I'm trying to do."
Viewers react on social media
The remark sparked outrage among viewers, many of whom took to social media to voice their complaints. One fumed: "Burnham can’t even handle a fu****g #gmb interview….. and he is seen as a good communicator. Lies are mounting up! He can’t call an election, as the party majority will be wiped out and won’t survive on vibes."
Another said: "How dare Burnham say 'he doesn’t think an election is what people want'. How the hell does he know? Perhaps he should hold a poll. I think he may be surprised." A third demanded: "Burnham out of his depth and hasn't a clue, just call a general election."
Mixed reactions continue
Weighing in on the debate, a fourth added: "With respect Andy, I want a General Election, I'm sure others do as well."
