Hollywood star Alan Cumming has urged voters in Scotland to “reject the politics of Nigel Farage” in Thursday’s Holyrood election. The award-winning actor, best known for his role as host of The Traitors US, emphasised the importance of standing up for the kind of country Scots want to be, while also calling out the dangers of the far right.
The Perthshire-born star, who divides his time between New York and Scotland, highlighted the vital role of arts and culture in Scottish society. His comments come ahead of an event in Edinburgh with Scottish First Minister and SNP leader John Swinney, scheduled for later this week.
Polls Indicate Reform UK Could Surge
The event is taking place ahead of the Scottish Parliament election on Thursday, with recent polls suggesting that Reform UK, led in Scotland by Malcolm Offord, could secure second place. Cumming, a prominent supporter of Scottish independence, described the gathering with Swinney as “a great opportunity to discuss a whole range of topics important to the people of Scotland, find out more about our First Minister, and collectively call out the dangers of the far right”.
Arts and Culture Under Threat
Cumming stressed the significance of the creative sector, stating: “Art and culture in Scotland have always played a vital role in shaping who we are. They provide joy when we need it most and challenge those in power.” He added: “At a time when voices of division are growing louder, it’s more important than ever that we come together, speak openly, and stand up for the kind of country we want to be.”
The actor made a direct appeal to voters: “On Thursday, voters in Scotland have the chance to reject the politics of Nigel Farage and elect an SNP government who will fight for them. People have the chance to vote SNP to build a country that truly reflects Scotland’s values and chart a better, fairer future as an independent country.”
