Lib Dems Demand Chancellor Hunt Return £50k in 'Tainted' Russian-Linked Donations
Lib Dems: Hunt must return 'Russian-linked' £50k donation

The Liberal Democrats have launched a scathing attack on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, demanding he immediately return £50,000 in political donations they label as 'politically toxic' and tainted by Russian links.

The controversy centres on a substantial donation from Aquind Limited, a company previously co-directed by Russian oligarch Viktor Fedotov. The funds were received by Mr Hunt's local constituency association in Surrey.

A Question of Judgement Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

In a letter co-signed by Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper and party leader Sir Ed Davey, the Lib Dems highlighted the severe lapse in judgement. They pointed out that the donation was accepted even as the UK government was imposing sanctions on Russia and condemning its aggression in Ukraine.

'At a time when the UK was standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine, the Chancellor's local team was pocketing cash connected to a Russian oligarch,' the letter stated. The party insists this creates an unacceptable conflict of interest for one of the most powerful ministers in government.

Aquind's Controversial Backstory and Defunct Bid

Aquind Limited is no stranger to controversy. The company previously made a failed bid to build a major electricity interconnector between England and France, a project that was ultimately blocked by the government.

Although Mr. Fedotov is no longer a director, the Lib Dems argue the historical links are enough to soil the donation. They have called for complete transparency and a swift return of the funds to avoid any perception of undue influence.

The demand puts significant pressure on the Chancellor, who is currently shaping the nation's economic policy. It raises serious questions about the due diligence processes within political fundraising and the ethical lines surrounding foreign-linked donations.
