Farage's billionaire donor owns Thai wellness retreat

The Mirror has obtained an exclusive look inside the world of Christopher Harborne, the billionaire crypto tycoon described as Nigel Farage's 'useful cash machine,' and his luxurious Thai island wellness retreat. Harborne, 63, owns the Kamalaya resort on Koh Samui, a 'sanctuary for transformation and holistic healing' that boasts a monk's cave and offers guests a 75-minute fire ceremony for £172.

The Kamalaya Resort

Kamalaya, which discourages mobile phone use, is marketed as a 'philanthropic investment' by Harborne, who acquired it in 2021. Accommodation includes a penthouse pool suite at £941 per night, complete with a private plunge pool, alongside several plush villas. Harborne himself has stayed in a villa there, close to where he was photographed with Farage in 2022 during a birthday visit.

The resort's website states: 'Kamalaya entered a new chapter in November 2021, when the founders sold the sanctuary. Having spent months here as a guest, the new custodian experienced the impact of Kamalaya's philosophy first-hand and was inspired to ensure its preservation. Today, as the owner, he regards Kamalaya as a philanthropic investment.'

However, founders John and Karina Stewart left in 2024 due to 'incompatibility' with Harborne, with Spa Business reporting a 'bust-up.' John Stewart said: 'After three years... we've come to the conclusion that our business and wellness philosophies... are simply divergent and incompatible.'

Notable Guests and Activities

Former royal Sarah Ferguson, ex-wife of Prince Andrew, was among past guests, praising the 'magical' hillside retreat. In her autobiography, she recalled a meditation session: 'We sat cross-legged on mats around the fire, with everyone chanting Ohm. The wind abruptly changed and all the smoke blew in my eyes. I took it as a sign from the universe that I should close my eyes and stay focused.'

Kamalaya offers a 75-minute personal fire ceremony for £172.39, described as beneficial for 'emotional upliftment, embarking on a new beginning, or seeking parasympathetic rest.' Guests can also book 60-minute spiritual guidance for £131.56, designed to help 'weave through life's challenges, periods of stagnation, grief, or crises.' Additional activities include 30-minute private mantra chanting at £63.51, which can 'profoundly transform the human experience.'

Political Context

Farage is under investigation by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for allegedly failing to declare a £5 million gift from Harborne. Reform UK claims the money was 'a personal, unconditional gift,' while Farage says it was for personal security and a 'reward' for Brexit campaigning. Harborne, ranked sixth on the Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated £18 billion, has not commented.
